Chapter 11 Urinary System Flashcards
What does the urinary system do?
- Excretion of metabolic wastes
- Maintenance of water-salt balance and acid-base balance
- Secretion of hormones
What are the organs of the urinary system?
Kidneys, uterus, urinary bladder, and urethra.
What are the macroscopic structures of the kidney?
Renal cortex, renal medulla, and renal pelvis.
What are the microscopic structures of the kidney?
Nephrons.
Nephrons have?
Afferent arteriole and efferent ateriole.
Nephron breakdown has?
Glomerular capsule, proximal convoluted tubule, loop of nephron and distal convoluted tubule.
What are the 3 stages of urine formation?
Glomerular filtration
Tubular reabsorption
Tubular secretion
What is glomerular filtrate?
Contents of the glomerular capsule after filtration.
Tubular reabsorption occurs?
As molecules and ions are passively and actively reabsorbed from the nephron into the blood.
What do kidneys excrete?
Waste molecules.
What maintains acid based balance of blood?
Kidneys.
What are the urinary system disorders?
Urethritis, cystitis, pyelonephritis, and kidney failure.
Approximately 99% of the water that is filtered in the glomerulus is reabsorbed.
