Chapter 14 Nervous System Flashcards
What is the nervous system?
Reception and process of sensory information from both the external and the internal environments.
What are the two parts of the nervous system?
CNS (Central Nervous System)
PNS (Peripheral Nervous System).
What are the three functions of the nervous system?
Reaction of input,
integration of data,
generation of motor output.
What are the two cell types of nervous tissue?
Neurons
Neuroglia
What is the neuron composed of?
Dendrites,
Cell body,
Axons.
What is the myelin sheath?
Covers long axons and formed by neuroglia cells.
What information do the nerve signals send?
Resting potential,
Action potential,
Signal propagation
What does the synapse have?
Axon terminal
Neurotransmitters
What do neurotransmitters do?
Activate acetylcholine,
norepinephrine
serotonin
What does the CNS have?
Meninges
White and gray matter
4 parts of the brain
What does the spinal cord do?
Conducts information to and from the brain and carries out reflex actions.
The cerebrum has _ connected by the _.
Two cerebral hemispheres; corpus callosum.
The cerebral cortex has which layers?
Frontal
Parietal
Occipital
Temporal
What are the areas in the cerebrum?
Primary motor area
Primary somatosensory area
Association areas
Wernicke and Broca’s area
What else does the brain have?
Basal nuclei, diencephalon, the cerebellum, the brain stem, the medulla oblongata, midbrain and reticular formation.
