What does the respiratory system do?
Ensures oxygen enters the body and carbon dioxide leaves the body.
Inspiration
Inhalation
Expiration
Exhalation
Ventilation
Inhale and exhale.
What does the Nose do?
Open at nostrils, which lead to nasal cavities.
What does the Pharynx do?
Throat, connects to nasal cavities and oral cavities to the larynx.
What does the trachea do?
Windpipe connects the larynx and bronchi.
What does the bronchi do?
Leads to the right and left lungs.
What are the lungs?
Pair cone-shaped organs in the thoracic cavity.
What is the two step process of breathing (ventilation)?
Inhalation
Exhalation
Tidal volume
The amount of volume that normally enters and exits.
Vital capacity
Amount of air that moves in plus the amount that moves out with maximum effort.
Inspiratory and Expiratory Reserve Volume
Difference between normal amounts and maximum effort amounts of air moved.
Residual Volume
The amount of air that stays in the lungs when we breath (aka dead air space).
What does the brain do?
Is the respiratory control center.
