American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA)
Agency that certifies speech-language pathologists and audiologists.
Audiologist
Professional that works with people who have hearing, balance, and related ear problems.
Board Certified Specialist in Audiology (BCS-A)
Audiologist who has met education and experience requirements and successfully completed the certification exam.
Board Certified Specialist in Child Language and Language Disorders (BCS-CL)
Specialized certification for speech therapists in treating children with language differences and disorders.
Board Certified Specialist in Fluency (BCS-F)
Specialized certification for speech therapists in treating speech disorders such as stuttering.
Board Certified Specialist in Intraoperative Monitoring (BCS-IOM)
Advanced specialized training plus the completion of an exam that trains audiologists to monitor the auditory nerve when there is a risk of damage during surgery.
Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders (BCS-S)
Specialty certification for speech therapists who work with individuals with neurological diseases that affect swallowing.
Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A)
Issued to individuals who present evidence of their ability to provide independent clinical services to patients diagnosed with auditory disorders.
Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP)
Issued to individuals who present evidence of their ability to provide independent clinical services to patients diagnosed with speech or language disorders.
Certified Audiology Assistant (C-AA)
Relatively new profession to support audiologists; postsecondary certification programs are available.
Certified Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (C-SLPA)
Professionals that provide for speech language pathologists. A relatively new profession since training programs for certified speech language assistants were established in the early 2000s.
Cochlear Implant Speciality Certification (CISC)
American Board of Audiologists certification offered for audiologists with competency in cochlear implant surgery and rehabilitation after surgery.
Communication disorder
Disruption in the regular or normal functions of communication.
Doctor of Audiology (AuD)
Academic degree in audiology practice; required to become a licensed audiologist.
Hearing aid dispenser
Most states require that individuals who dispense hearing aids to be licensed; some states may require that audiologists who fit hearing aids obtain a hearing aid dispenser license.
