Chapter 16 - Animal Responses Flashcards
CNS
Brain and spinal chord and relay neurones
PNS
sensory and motor neurones that connect the CNS to the rest of the body
Parts of the PNS
somatic and autonomic nervous systems
Somatic nervous system
Conscious control eg. Impulses to muscles
Autonomic nervous system and the parts it’s split into
- subconscious control eg. Impulses to glands and cardiac muscle
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
Sympathetic
Fight or flight
Parasympathetic
Rest and digest
Function of cerebrum
Control voluntary action and conscious thought
Cerebellum
Controls unconscious function
Function of medulla oblongata
Autonomic control eg. Heart and breathing rate
Function of hypothalamus
Regulatory centre of water balance and temperature
Function of pituitary gland
Store and release hormones that’s regulate bodily functions
Difference between a reflex arc and normal action potential
Reflex arc is faster as it misses out the conscious part of the brain
Why are reflexes important
- involuntary; brain can focus on more complex responses, not
- not learnt; present at birth providing immediate protection
- fast; don’t involve many synapses
