chapter 16 Flashcards
muller layer illusion
Arrow heads, the line with inverted arrow heads is perceived as being longer
Consists of two lines of equal length each having opposite shaped patterns on the end
the ponzo illusion
Depth cues of linar perspective and height in the visual field make us interpret the upper horizontal line as being longer than the lower horizontal line
the Ames room
Shows that we maintain shape consistency (of a room) at the expensive of size consistency
Room constructed in a trapezoidal shape but appears square when viewed through a peephole
Peep hole means strongest binocular depth cues don’t work
whats an illusion
An illusion occurs when perception consistently differs from reality
They are consistent from person to person
And are caused by psychological factors
(an illusion is a phenomenon in which perceptions constantly differ from objective reality)
whats synaesthesia
A condition where stimulation of one sense causes the perception of another sense
(The mixing up of senses)
Eg seeing numbers, letters or tastes as colours
Mixing occurs after the primary sensory cortex has accurately registered stimulus
whats the perceptual set
a predisposition to attend certain aspects of the visual scene, or to interpret stimuli in a particular way, according to certain preconceptions
colour intensity
the brightness or strength of a colour can impact our perception of flavour based on our understanding or experience of which flavours correspond to which colours, the more intense the colour the more intense the flavour
texture in taste
the way food or drinks feel in our mouth play an important role in our perception of flavour
crispy watery etc
