Chapter 15 Vocab. Flashcards
All of the aspects of environment that have never been alive.
Abiotic factor
Consists of all the parts of Earth where life can be found.
Biosphere
All of the living or once-living aspects of the environment
Biotic factor
Is the science of how living things interact with each other and their environment.
Ecology
This refers to the number of individuals of each sex and age in the population.
Age-sex structure
Is the largest population size that can be supported in an area without harming the environment.
Carrying capacity
Is the average number of individuals in a population for a given area.
Population density
How the individuals are spread out through their area.
Population distribution
How quickly a population changes in size over a time.
Population growth rate
The age-sex structure of a population that is represented with a special bar graph.
Population pyramid
Predators that play a special role in their community.
Keystone species
How many individuals are in a certain area.
Population
A relationship between organisms that depend on the same resources.
Competition
A symbiotic relationship in which both species benefit.
Mutualism
A symbiotic relationship in which one species benefits and the other species in harmed.
Parasitism
Is a relationship in which members of one species consume members of another species.
Predation
The consuming species
Predator
The species that is consumed
Prey
A close relationship between 2 species in which at least one species benefits.
Symbiosis
When population increases the growth rate increases. Generally occurs only when a population is living under ideal conditions.
Exponential growth
The population starts increasing and the growth rate increase but only to a certain point..
Logistic growth
The species that is harmed.
Host
The biotic component of an ecosystem.
Community
A symbolic relationship in which one species benefits while other species is not affected.
Commensalism
Usually lives on its host.
Parasite
Need a constant input of energy to supply the needs of their organisms.
Ecosystem
The physical environment in which a species lives and to which it has adapted.
Habitat
The role that a particular species plays in its ecosystem.
Niche
Water based biomes that include freshwater and marine biomes.
Aquatic biome
A group of similar ecosystems with the same general abiotic factors and primary producers.
Biome
The average weather ina place over a long period of time.
Climate
A lake is an example of this, it includes shallow water, the top layer, and the deeper water.
Freshwater biome
An ocean is an example of this, it includes top 200 meters, below 200 meters, the bottom.
Marine biome
Land based biomes that range from artic to tundra to tropical rainforests.
Terrestrial biome
