Chapter 15: The Biosphere Flashcards
Tropical wet forests
Plants with broad leaves that fall off throughout the year
- Also referred to as tropical rainforest
Savannas
A mixed woodland-grassland ecosystem characterised by the trees being sufficiently widely spaced so that the canopy does not close
Subtropical deserts
Hot temperatures, warm soil, and low amounts of precipitation.
Chaparral
Scrubland plant communities composed of broad-leaved evergreen shrubs, bushes, and small trees usually less than 2.5 metres (about 8 feet) tall
Temperate grasslands
Cold winters and warm summers with some rain
Temperate forests
A forest found between the tropical and boreal regions, located in the temperate zone
Taiga
A conifer or conifer-hardwood forest type occurring on moist to dry sites characterized by species dominant in the Canadian boreal fores
Arctic tundra
Treeless regions found in the Arctic and on the tops of mountains, where the climate is cold and windy, and rainfall is scant
What is the difference between marine and freshwater ecosystems?
Freshwater habitats include ponds, lakes, rivers, and streams,
Marine habitats include the ocean and salty seas.
