When a big country takes over a weaker country.

For the resources, military presence in another part of the world, and another market to put supplies in.

It was the mindset of imperialistic leaders, wanting to take over weaker countries and believed the white race dominated.

U.S. leader who sailed to Japan and started a relationship with them, starting point of imperialism.

Pushed America to be a stronger naval power.
What was “Seward’s Folly”?
A way to make fun of William Seward who was the United States’ Secretary of State. He bought alaska for 7.2 million.
Why did the US annex Hawaii?
Mainly because there were many America farmers growing sugar cane there.

Forced Cuba to acknowledge that America would help them if they got weak.
What was China’s Open Door?
America saying the would keep trading with China until their doors closed.
What was yellow journalism?
Exaggerated stories about the rebellion in Cuba against Spain.

USS Main exploding in the Havana Harbor and the De Lome letter criticising President William McKinley.
Why did America want to intervene in Cuba’s rebellion against Spain?
Spain was treated the Cubans really badly and America owned a lot of sugar cane plantations there.
What did the U.S. occupation of the Phillippines after the Spanish-American War cause?
A debate by Americans on weather the US had the right to annex the Phillippines.
