what are neurodevelopmental disorders
usually diagnosed in childhood - basically the brain is not functioning properly
- adhd
- autism spectrum disorder
what is adhd and what type of disorder is it
neurodevelopmental disorder, 5-10 percent
- caused by low level of activity in brain
- inattention
- hyperactivity, seek external stim. to raise brain activity
- impulsivity
- stimulant medication for treatment
what is autism spectrum disorder and what type of disorder is it
neurodevelopmental disorder, 1 percent
- caused by abnormal brain development
- impaired social interaction, impaired communication
- repetitive behaviors
- start with smaller brain/head and brain develops much faster and becomes larger than average
what is the types of psychotic disorder we studied
schizophrenia, 1 percent
- largely genetic cause
- positive symptoms are addition to normal behavior, such as hallucinations and delusions
- negative symptoms, absence of normal behavior, such as flat emotion and catatonia
- cognitive symptoms, hard to learn and word salad
what are the mood disorders
- major depressive disorder and persistent depressive disorder
- bipolar and related disorders
what is major depressive disorder and persistent depressive disorder and what type of disorder is it
both are mood disorders
- separated by severity, mdd more severe than pdd
- pdd, must have symptoms for at least 2 yrs
- mdd, so severe you don’t need symptoms for specific timeframe
- sadness, lack of sleep, sleep alot, weight gain/loss, loss of interest
- mdd most common worldwide of all disorders
what are bipolar and related disorders
manic and depression phases
- hypomania not as severe as mania
- bipolar 1, cycle between depression and mania
- bipolar 2, cycle between depression and hypomania
what are the types of anxiety disorders
generalized anxiety disorder
-pervasive, excessive and unrealistic worry
panic disorder
-frequent panic attacks
social anxiety disorder
-extreme self consciousness, fear of humiliation
agoraphobia
-fear of being unable to escape from public spaces
specific phobias
-intense fear of specific things
what are obsessive compulsive and related disorders
thoughts and rituals
- obsesssive, uncontrollable thoughts about something
- rituals, behavior you have to do
- obssesive-compulsive, is obsessed, thoughts, with something and compulsed, ritual, to do that something
- anxiety builds as person obsesses with something until they’re compelled to do something. anxiety goes down but starts to build again so it’s cyclical
what are the trauma and stress related disorders
ptsd and acute stress disorder
what is ptsd and what kind of disorder is it
trauma and stress related disorder
- cognitive, emotional, and physiological symptoms
- triggered by traumatic event
- person relives events in dreams or while awake
- can be triggered by environment
what is acute stress disorder and what kind of disorder is it
symptoms occur immediately, whereas ptsd is diagnosed at least 30 days later
can have ptsd or asd or both
what is the dissociative disorder studied in class
dissociative identity disorder
- multiple personalities
- triggered by traumatic event, usually extreme physical/sexual child abuse
