Chapter 15 Immunity Flashcards
Antigen
any molecule that stimulates an immune response
Innate/Nonspecific Response
Born with this system, consists of physical barriers, WBC, inflammatory response (histamine), chemicals
Inferferons
released by infected cells to warn other body cells and activate WBC in the area
Specific/Acquired Immunity
Takes over if Innate/Nonspecific response doesn’t fix it
Antigen Presenting Cells
APC
Macrophages
Dendric cells
B lymphocytes
3 Major histocompatibility complexes
MHC 1 - self antigen, RBC
MHC 2 - all APC
MHC 3 - genes that code for complement that aids immune response
Function of Macrophage
Carries antigen to T Helper lymphocyte in a lymph node
T Helper Cells
Activate other lymphocytes
T Suppressor Cells
manage the immune response
B Cells
make antibodies that float and plasma and attach to antigens there
Memory cells
Transport antigen information to other lymph nodes in case pathogen comes back, it will be recognized
Opsonization
allows macrophages to phagocytose the antigen
Neutralization
surround viruses and exotoxins
Agglutination
take cells out of circulation
Precipitation
take smaller molecules out of circulation
