chapter 15 failures of rump Flashcards
what was the main issue with the rump parliament?
too conservative for the army but not conservative enough for the political nation
why was the rump so conservative?
individual MPs did not support regicide, majority were merchants and lawyers - didn’t want reform, economy doing very badly - not enough money for proper reform, security threats from ireland and scotland, fear of radicals
what was the hale commision 1652?
was set up to recommend reform but none were used
what was the blasphemy act 1650?
was designed to prevent radical religious groups such as quakers and ranters
what reforms did the rump do?
made legal proceedings in english, promoted the gospel in wales, ireland, and the north
what did the rump not do?
introduce constitutional reform in order to establish godly rule
why did cromwell support the army?
even though he was more conservative, the rump was not doing enough and it was not united enough
what did cromwell do to the rump?
forcibly dissolved the rump after he found out there was a committee set up to judge MPs considered for new seats - felt this would not mean enough godly MPs were in parliament
what was the new parliament known as and why?
the nominated assembly as the MPs had been nominated by the army from different congregations across the country
