Affirmative
speaks in favor of an issue or change
Negative
speaks against the issue or change
Proposition
a statement of a problem that is worded so that there are clearly two sides to the argument
Flow sheet
a diagram of the arguments, listed in parallel columns across a page
Three types of propositions
Fact, value, policy
Proposition of face
a statement that something is or is not true
Proposition of value
a statement that something is good or bad, right or wrong, useful or useless
Proposition of policy
a statement that says something should or should not be done
4 qualities fo a good policy proposition
Proposition should be debatable
Worded as a statement, not a question
Worded so that the affirmative supports the change
Contains only 1 issue
What does a competent debator do?
finds evidence, creates arguments and is ethical in the use of evidence
