Measurement and assessment

A

measurement is quantative
how much, how often, how well by providing scores, ranks or ratings.

Assessment is broader than measurement, includes all kinds of ways to sample and observe students skills and knowledge and abilities.

Formative and Summative assessment

A

formative : ungraded testing occurs before or during instruction. The purpose of formative assessment are to guide teacher in future teaching and planning.

Summative : occurs at the end of instruction. Its purpose is to inform the teacher and the students about the level of accomplishment attained. Provides a summary of accomplishment, the final exam is a classic example.

Norm-Referenced test interpretations

A

Testing in which scores are compared with the average performance of others. norm is a typical performance of a particular group. Typically cover a wide range of general objectives. Does not tell you if students are ready to move on. “On the curve” is norm referenced.

A

testing in which scores are compared to a set performance standard. tests measure mastery of very specific objectives. The results should tell the teacher exactly what a student can and cannot do.
