Motivation in learning and teaching
Motivation
in interanl state that arouses, directs and maintains behaviour.
intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation
intrinsic is personal gain, student’s see the value of completing somethuing, of understanding material and learning which drives them
vs.
Extrinsic motivation which is exterior influence, a student can be motivated to get an A on a test because it means they gained something, it’s not about the activity itself
Locus of casuality
Difference between the two types of motivation relies on locus of casuality, whether the motivation comes from inside or outside.
Key factors in motivation according to behavioural viewpoint, a humanistic viewpoint, cognitive viewpoint,social cognitive viewpoint, socia cultural viewpoint?`
- (BV) extrinsic motivation caused by rewards and incentives
- (HV) intrinsic motivation created by the need for personal development
- (CV) a person’s active search for meaning, understanding and competence and the power of the individual’s attributions and interpretations.
- (SCOG) both the behaviourist concern with the consequences of behaviour and the cognitivsts’ interest in the impact of individual beliefs and expectations.
- (SCUL) expectancy x value theories, emphasize legitimate engaged participation and identity within the community.
Maslow’s theory
Maslow called four lower level needs- survival, safety , belonging and self esteem.
Three higher level are intellectual acheivement, aesthetic appreciation and self-actualization. Once these are met the person seeks further fufillement.
Self determination theory affects motivation how?
self determination theory suggests that motivation is affected by a persons need for competence, autonomy, control and relatedness. when people experience self regulation they are intrinsically motivated

ways of understanding how you think and learn. Impacts individuals approches to learning
Weiner’s theory
most attributed causes for success or failures can be characterized in three dimensions : Locus, stability and responsibility
