Chapter 1.4 Specialisation in animal cells Flashcards
What does a nerve cell consist of?
- Nucleus
- Cell body
- Axon
- Dendrites
- Myelin sheath for insulation
- Synapse
What is the function of the axon?
The function of the axon is to transmit information to different neurons, muscles and glands.
What is the function of the dendrites?
Dendrites are the segments of the neuron that receive stimulation in order for the cell to become active. They conduct electrical messages to the neuron cell body for the cell to function.
What is the function of the synapse?
The function of the synapse is to transfer electric activity (information) from one cell to another.
Name one adaptation of a nerve cell.
They have lots of dendrites to make connection to other nerve cells.
Name one adaptation of a sperm cell.
A long tail whips from side to side to help move the sperm through the water or the female reproductive system.
What does a sperm cell consist of?
- Tail
- Acrosome
- Nucleus
What is the function of the flagella?
A flagella is a whip-like structure that allows a cell to move.
What is the function of the acrosome?
The function of the acrosome reaction is to help the sperm get through the egg’s protective coat and to allow the plasma membranes of the sperm and egg to fuse.
