CHAPTER 14: LYMPHATIC SYSTEM Flashcards
1
Q
lymphatic system
A
- entire body covered in lymph vessels
- auxillary reroute for return of ECF to circ system
- like a DRAIN for inflammatory responses
surveillance, recognition, protection!
2
Q
lymph
- what is it
- how is it formed
- what is it made of
- main purpose
A
- plasma-like liquid carried thru lymph circulation
- blood components move out of blood vessels into EC spaces
- made of water, dissolves salts and 2-5% proteins
- transport WBC, fat, cellular debris, and INFECTIOUS AGENTS
3
Q
Lymphatic vessels
- where do they go
- purpose
A
- capillaries permeate all parts of body BUT the bone, thymus, and placenta (little in brain)
- return lymph to circ (flow toward heart, eventually back to bloodstream)
4
Q
Lymphatic Filariasis
- what is it
- how does it develop
- effects
A
- tropical infection spread by mosquito
- vector deposit larvae, move into lymph sys and develop into adults
- chronic infec cause lymph circ blockage and elephantiasis (mass extremity swelling)
pathogen suppresses immune response!
5
Q
primary lymphoid organs
A
- thymus: high growth rate, active till puberty then shrink, T cell mature
- bone marrow: B cell mature
6
Q
secondary lymphoid organs
A
- spleen and lymph nodes
- collections of cells throughout body tissues, skin, mucous memb
7
Q
points of entry- diff lymph tissues
A
SALT: skin associated lymphatic tissue
GALT: gut associated
MALT: mucosal associated
