CHAPTER 14: IMMUNE SYSTEM Flashcards
ECF- bloodstream
- blood
- plasma
- serum
- hematopoeisis
- stem cells
- leukocytes
RES: reticuloendothelial system
- network of connective tissue fibers that connect w other cells of surrounding organs
- inhabited by phagocytic cells (mononuclear phagocyte system)
- macrophages ready to ATTACK and DIGEST microbes that pass 1st line of defense
Blood and plasma
- plasma and formed elements (RBC/WBC/Platelets)
plasma: 92% water, metabolic proteins, globulins (antibodies), clotting factor, hormones
serum
liquid part after a clot has formed
this is the plasma WITHOUT the clotting factors
Hematopoeisis
production of RBC
produce blood and bone marrow cells (RBC, WBC, platelets, lymphocytes)
Stem cells
undifferentiated cells
- precursor for RBC, WBC, platelets
Leukocytes
- granulocytes and agranulocytes
Granulocytes
lobed nucleus
- neutrophil
- eosinophil (destroy euk pathogens)
- basophil (release chem mediators)
- mast cell (1st LOD for local invasion)
Agranulocytes
unlobed rounded nucleus
- lymphocytes: B and T cells
- monocytes/macrophage (largest WBC)
Monocytes differentiate into…
macrophage= final differentiation of monocyte
dendritic= trap pathogen and help the immune response
lymphocytes: T and B cell difference
B cell= humoral immunity, make antibodies
T cell= cell mediated immunity, kill foreign cells
