Conflict
A process that begins when one party perceives another party as affecting something that the first party cares about negatively
Functional conflict
Support the goals of the group and improves its performance and is thus a contricive form of conflict
Dysfunctional conflicts
Are conflicts that hinder group performance

Stage 1 of conflict
Appearance of conditions - causes or sources - create opportunities for it to arise
Stage 2 of conflict
Where conflict issues are defined
What the conflict is decided between parties
Perceived conflict
Awareness by one or more parties of the existence of conditions that create opportunities for conflict to arise
Felt conflict
Can be described as emotional involvement in a conflict that creates anxiety, tension, frustration, or hostility
Stage 3 of conflict
Intentions intervene between people’s perceptions and emotions, and their overt behaviour
They are decisions to act in a given way
There is slippage between intentions and behaviour, so behaviour does not always accurately reflect a person’s intentions

A dynamic process of interaction

The action reaction interplay between conflicting parties creates consequences. These outcome may be functional if the conflict improves the group’s performance or dysfunctional if it hinders performance

Is the use of resolution and stimulation techniques to achieve the desired level of conflict
What are the five conflict handling intentions:
Competing
Collaborating
Avoiding
Accommodating
Compromising
Negotiation
A process that occurs when two or more parties decide how to allocate scarce resources.
What are the two ways of negotiating?
Distributive bargaining
Integrative bargaining
Distributive bargaining
Negotiation that seeks to divide up a fixed amount of resources
Win-lose situation
Integrative bargaining
Negotiation that seeks one or more settlements that can create a win-win situation

Mediator
A neutral third party who facilitates a negotiated solution by using reasoning, persuasion, and suggestions for alternatives
Effectiveness relatively high
Arbitrator
Third party to a negotiation who has the authority to dictate an agreement can be voluntary or compulsory.
Can lead to a settlement
Conciliator
A trusted third party who provides an informal communication link between the negotiator and the negotiating partner
