CHAPTER 14 - Cell Division Flashcards
What are chromosomes ?
They are coiled threads of DNA (which forms from genes) and protein that become visible in the nucleus at cell division
What is cell continuity ?
It means that all cells develop from pre-existing cells
What is a haploid cell ?
It is a cell that has one set of chromosomes
What is a diploid cell ?
It is a cell that has two sets of chromosomes
What is a homologous pair ?
It consists of two chromosomes that each have genes for the same features at the same positions.
What is the cell cycle ?
It describes the cell’s activities in the state of non-division and division.
What is interphase ?
It is the phase in the cell cycle when the cell is not dividing.
What are some cellular processes that occur during interphase in which the nucleus is not dividing ?
Replication, Growth, Respiration, Protein synthesis, Photosynthesis,
What is mitosis ?
It is division of the nucleus to produce two identical daughter nuclei containing identical sets of chromosomes.
What are the 4 stages of mitosis ?
Party Monday And Tuesday (P,M,A,T) Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase.
What can cause mitosis and cell division to lose control ?
Cancer
What is cancer
It is a group of disorders in which certain cells lose normal control over both their rate of mitosis and the number of divisions they undergo
What is meiosis ?
It is a type of division of the nucleus which produces four daughter nuclei, each containing half the chromosome number of the original parent cell.
