Chapter 14- Brain And Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Cerebellum (brain)
- coordinates somatic motor patterns (proprioception-awareness of ones body position, motion, equilibrium)
- adjusts output of other somatic motor centers in the brain and spinal cord
Cerebrum (brain)
- divided into paired hemispheres
- memory storage and processing
- conscious and subconscious regulation of skeletal muscle contractions
Diencaphalon (brain)
•contains the thalamus and hypothalamus
Thalamus
•relay and processing center for sensory info
Hypothalamus
Center for controlling emotion, autonomic functions, and hormone production
Midbrain (brain)
- processing of visual and auditory data
- reflexive somatic motor responses
- maintenance of consciousness
Prons (brain)
- relays sensory info to the cerebellum and thalamus
- subconscious somatic and visceral motor centers
- connect the cerebellum to the brain stem
Limbic system (brain)
- establishes emotional states
* links conscious functions of cerebrum with unconscious and autonomic functions of the brain stem
Medulla oblongtata (brain)
- relays sensory info to the thalamus and other portions of brain stem
- autonomic centers for regulation of cardiovascular respiration and digestive system
Cranial meninges (basic function)
Protect delicate tissues of the brain from physical forces
Cranial meninges: Dura mater
Outer and inner fibrous layer
Cranial meninges: Arachnoid mater
Consists of arachnoid membrane, which covers the brain providing a smooth surface
•subarachnoid space, where CSF flows
Cranial meninges: Pia mater
Innermost layer
What arteries deliver oxygenated blood to the brain?
Internal carotid and vertebral arteries
_________ veins drain _________ blood from the __________?
Internal jugular; deoxygenated; brain
