Chapter 14 Flashcards
What is a hydroxyl group?
-OH group
Intermolecular forces between non-polar molecules
Very weak London forces
Bonding in alcohol
Polar bond between O-H because of the difference in electronegativity between oxygen and hydrogen
Volatility in alkanes and alcohols
Alcohol has a lower volatility than an alkane with the same number of carbons
Solubility in alkanes and alcohols
Alcohols are very soluble because they form hydrogen bonds with water unlike alkanes which do not because they are not polar.
Primary alochol
Bonded to a carbon which is only bonded to one other carbon
Secondary alcohol
Bonded to a carbon which is bonded to a carbon which is bonded to two other carbons
Tertiary alcohol
Bonded to a carbon which is bonded to a carbon which is bonded to three other carbons
Oxidation of alcohols
Mixture goes from orange to green if oxidized by oxidizing agent.
