Chapter 13: reporting survey results Flashcards
What is the overall structure of a written report of any research type?
- Title page
- Abstract
- Introduction and theoretical background
- Methods
- Results
- Discussion and conclusions
- Referenecs
- Appendix (if necessary)
What are the tips for making a good, readable and informative Powerpoint Slide (7)
- Make sure that a slide only contains one idea, theory or example
- Do not spend to much time on each slide. 1-2 min maximum
- Makes sure your titles of slides make sense
- Do not use too many words. Approximately 7 vertical by 7 horizontal
- Use bullet points for each point you want to make
- Cite your sources and include a reference slide
- Use colors and cartoons/animations only to increase clarity of your point
What is the order of the methods section (4)
- Participants
- Procedure of data collection
- Instrument used to collect data
- Design of the study
What are the guidelines on how to format a poster (8)
- Make sure you completely fill it without it becoming overwhelming
- Do not use long lines of text. About 15 lines per page maximum
- List of bullet points to summarize information. Don’t use to many or double loaded
- Use a large enough font type for people to read it from 1 - 2 meter away
- Include graphs and visuals
- Create your poster using specialized software
- Make sure that readers are guided through the poster by ordering information top left to bottom right and numbering sections
- Most important or eye-catching information should be in or near the middle of the poster as this is the place people tend to look first
What test do you use to compare if 2 nominal variables are dependent of another?
Chi-squared test
What test do you use to compare groups (mean difference) (2)
T-test (2 groups)
ANOVA (3 or more groups)
What test do you use for simple linear trends?
Regression analysis
What are the assumptions of linear regression models? (3)
- linearity - relationship between outcome variable and predictor is linear
- Normality of residuals - residuals are normally distributed
- Homoscedasticity - residuals need to be of equal size for high and low values of the predictor
How can you visualize nominal data? (3)
- pie chart
- Bar Chart
- Cross tabulations
How can you visualize ordinal data?
- Bar Chart
- Cross tabulations
- With more than 5 categories: histogram, correlation plot or boxplot
How can you visualize continuous data
- Line Graph
- Boxplot
- Scatterplot
When is it appropriate to use a histogram for ordinal data?
If the ordinal data has more than 5 different categories
What does a line graph show?
Relationship between 2 continuous variables, usually over time.
What does a box plot show?
How the scores on a variable are distributed
What does a scatterplot show?
The correlation between 2 variables and assumption checks
