Public Policy
The overall purpose behind individual governmental decisions and programs. It is the result of public officials’ setting of priorities by creating the budget, making official decisions,and passing laws
Mandate
Action that the national government requires state and local governments to take or that the state requires cities, counties, and special districts to take
Redistributive Public Policy
Laws and government decisions that have the effect of taking wealth, power, and the other resources from some citizens and giving those resources to others. Examples would be the graduated income tax and affirmative action programs
Poverty Threshold
The level of income below which a family is officially considered poor. It is established annually as the basis for determining eligibility for a variety of social programs. Also called the federal poverty line
Temporary Assistance for the Needy Families (TANF)
A federal-state cooperative block grant program that provides cash assistance to indigent families with dependent children for a period of up to five years
Medicaid
A jointly funded federal-state program to provide medical care to low-income families
Workers’ Compensation
A program that provides medical, income, death, and brutal benefits for workers who are injured, become ill, or are killed on the job
Workfare
The concept that in other for poor citizens to qualify for welfare assistance, they must have a job or be actively seeking a job
School Vouchers
A policy that would allow families who send their students to private schools to receive a tax deduction to cover a part of private school tuition. This has not been enacted in Texas
Charter Schools
Special public schools set up to provide unique educational opportunities for students who attend them
Affirmative Action
Admissions program that takes race, gender, and ethnicity into account to attempt to make up for the past patterns of discrimination
