What is human resource management?
A system of recruiting employees to the business. They are then trained, developed and rewarded for their efforts.
What is human resource planning?
HR planning ensures that the business has the correct number of staff with the necessary skills and qualifications to fill all vacancies in the business.
What are the five steps in hr planning?
- Review current staff - staff number and qualifications
- Forecast hr needs - estimates what skills and number of employees are needed
- Estimate Labour turnover - estimates number of employees who will leave
- Create an hr plan - makes a plan to ensure the correct numbers and skills are there
- Review the plan - make sure the plan meets the needs of the business

What is recruitment and selection?
Attracting suitable candidates with relevant skills and qualifications and experience to apply for the job. Decide which applicant is most suitable for the job vacancy.

What is a job description?
A written outline of the job title, duties and responsibilities associated with the role. It may include details of pay and the person to whom the employee will report.
What is a person specification?
This sets out the ideal candidate for the job vacancy. It outlines the qualifications, skills, characteristics, and experience needed by the person to fill the role.
What is a job advertisement ?
The hr manager creates a job advertisement based on the job description and person specification. The vacancy should be advertised in a location that will be seen by the largest number of potential candidates.
What 5 things does a job advertisement usually contain?
Main duties of the advertised role Qualification and skills required Pay and benefits Location of jobs Methods by which the candidate should apply
What is screening candidates?
The hr manager matches the job application received against the job description and person specification. A shortlist is made of suitable candidates. Applications that do not meet the criteria are rejected.
What 3 methods used when applying for jobs?
- CV (cirricullum vitae) is a written document that outlines a persons qualifations skills and experience.
- Cover letter - a letter giving details of why they want the job.
- Application form - candidate answers questions and includes qualifications and experience.
What is a selection test?
The hr manager may conduct a range of selection tests to further shortlist the candidates.
What are the 3 selection tests used?
- Intelligence test - measures numerical and language reasoning
- Personality tests - identify whether the candidates personality is suitable for the job
- Work sample tests - candidate performs sample jobs to identify if they have the necessary skills for the role
What is an interview?
A formal meeting between the applicant and the representative of the company.
What are the 2 types of interviews?
One to one interview - between the candidate and representative of the business
Panel interview - candidate and a number of interviewers
What is a reference check?
Hr manager conducts a reference check on candidates. Reference provided by someone who can confirm the educational and work experience details given about the candidate.
What is a job offer?
A formal job offer is sent to the candidate in writing and jr includes details such as job title, salary, length of probation period
What is training?
The process that ensure that the employees have the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needs to carry out their job effectively.
What are the 2 types of training?
On the job training - takes place in the workplace
Off the job training - takes place in a venue outside the workplace.
Give 3 examples of on the job training?
Work shadowing - observing an experienced employees
Demonstrations - showing a new employee how to carry out a role
Job rotation - employee moves airy day the firm doing different jobs
