Chapter 13 Flashcards
Why is natural selection more of an editing process than a creative one?
When we see the effects of natural selection, new alleles aren’t created in response to circumstance changes. Under environmental changes, alleles that are already present in the gene pool may become more advantageous and favoured by natural selection.
Homologous structures
Are structures that have similar form between different species, even though they may have vastly different function. This is the result of species sharing a common ancestor.
How does molecular biology provide evidence of evolution?
The genetic codes and molecular structures of DNA, RNA, and proteins, are universal amongst living organisms. All species likely evolved from an ancestor who used these same genetic codes.
What is a homologous gene?
Genes are homologous if they were derived from the same ancestral gene.
