31 Nervous System Flashcards
Parasympathetic division primes body for
Rest! Digestion, conserving energy.
Sympathetic division primes body for
Intense energy-consuming activities
Divisions of ANS (autonomic nervous system)
Sympathetic, parasympathetic, enteric
Myelinated sheath is made up of
SCHWAAAANN CELLLS
Voltage-gated ion channels are densely concentrated at
Nodes of ranvierrr bish
Define action potential
electrical signal used for communication. A change in membrane voltage in response to stimulus that is transmitted along axon to synaptic terminal.
Pros of chemical synapses
- synapse can be strengthened or weakened due to changes on either presynaptic or postsynaptic terminal
- ie., they are plastic. Important for learning and memory.
Pro of electrical signals
Good for very fast instantaneous information transfer, and synchrony of large neuron populations.
Why are synapses so important?
- can strengthen and weaken, allowing neural plasticity
- site of drug action
- many developmental degenerative disorders (Alzheimer’s) are diseases of the synapse
Homeostatic control centre. Controls pituitary gland, like a biological clock
Hypothalamus
Sorts data, both input and output, of cerebrum. “Relay centre”
Thalamus
Are gap junctions hydrophilic or phobic
Hydrophilic
These 4 things can be passed through gap junctions
Ions
Sugars
Amino acids
Nucleotides!
