Hostile Aggression
-Motivated by anger, hostility, or genuinely wanting to hurt the other person
Instrumental Aggression
-Motivated by something other than hostility, like wanting to get attention
What is the effect of heat on aggression?
-More violent crime in regions with hotter climates
-Violent crime reaches a max during the summer months
-Heat is associated with violent behavior
-Misattribution:
-You need to be angry first, then experience the heat
Social Learning Theory
-People learn how to behave in social contexts by observing others and copying their behaviors
Aggression and the media
When we watch tv, observe others or play video games, it gets stuck in our head
What do studies on video games and aggression show?
- Increase aggression temporarily
-Increase aggression when only we are angry
What is the relationship between social rejection and physical pain? How does this relate to aggression?
-Overlap between them
When you experience rejection you feel pain. -When you feel physical pain, then increases pain which leads to aggression
What is the relationship between income inequality and aggression? Why does this exist?
-More inequality, more homicides
-Exist bc we compete for limited resources
Does the presence of guns have any effect on aggression? In Berkowitz’s study with the shock machine, which participants delivered the highest shocks
- Yes
-When you are angry
-If you are not angry and see a gun, you won’t do anything
-When you are angry, you deliver more pain
What are the two types of dehumanization?
- Degrade them into an animal

-Mechanical
You pretend they have no emotion
How might we be able to reduce feelings of anger?
-Distance

-Southern are hypersensitivity to insults

Why do we see increased violence in stepfamilies?
- Bc they do not have inclusive fitness

Want to protect their offspring

-Men use physical
