chapter 11 Flashcards
Stereotypes
The belief and cognitive thoughts
Prejudice
attitude
Discrimination
Acts and behavior
What are the 3 different perspectives explaining why we stereotype?
-Economic competition
Limited economic sources
-Motivational
When we discriminate, can boost our ingroup status
-Convenient
Easy for us to respond
What is the difference between modern and traditional racism?
-Traditional
-Prejudice against a racial group that is explicitly acknowledged and expressed by the individuals
-Obvious indicators
-Modem
-Prejudice against a racial group that exists even though explicit racist beliefs are rejected
-Difficult to get rid of
-People can hide it
-Implicit
How can we measure modern/implicit prejudice?
-Can’t measure because we can hide
-Iap
-Can tell us that implicit prejudice, only predict implicit behavior and attitude
Realistic Group Conflict Theory
When groups compete for limited resources, these groups experience conflict, prejudice, and discrimination
What successfully helped researchers “reverse” the intergroup conflict between the boys in the Robbers Cave study?
-Used the common goal
-Superordinate goal
-goals that are worth completing but require two or more social groups to cooperatively achieve.
What is the relationship between self-esteem and discrimination?
When ingroup succeed, we feel better and have higher self esteem
Social Identity Theory
-A person’s self-concept and self-esteem are derived from:
1. Personal identity
2. and ingroup status/accomplishments.
-People are motivated to view their ingroup favorably because this enhances self-concept and self-esteem.
Minimal Group Paradigm
-they found that people tended to prefer their ingroup, even when these group distinctions were meaningless.
-We favor our ingroup compared to outgroup
-People automatically have favorites and like the other group less
What is the benefit of stereotyping?
-It can lead to a schema
-Saves our time and resources
-Does not give us immediately negative consequences
-Stereotyping is always negative
Do we make situational or dispositional attributions for stereotype-consistent behavior?
-Stereotyping is dispositional
We believe that the person is similar to the rest of the group
-Study:
When white push black, just playing
When black push white, aggressive
Outgroup Homogeneity
-The tendency to assume that members of outgroups are “all alike,” whereas members of ingroups have differences
Illusory Correlation
-An incorrect belief that two things are related when they are in fact not related
