Out-group Homogeneity affect
-the tendency to assume that the members of other groups are very similar to each other
When does the presence of others help performance? When does it hurt performance?
-Helps when you do something you are good at or is easy
-Hurts when its a hard task or unfamiliar
Social Facilitation
-Other people are around, affect or improves our performance
-When there is people around, increases arousal
Social Loafing
-Exerting less effort when working on a group task in which individual contributions cannot be monitored due to presence of others.
Do groups make better decisions than individuals?
-yes, If the problem has a precise, factual answer
Groupthink
-A style of thinking in which maintaining group cohesiveness and solidarity is more important than considering facts in a realistic manner.
Risky shift
-groups make riskier decisions than individuals
-the tendency for decisions made in groups to be less conservative than the decision of the average group member
group polarization
-Group decisions tend to be more extreme than those made by individuals
Approach-inhibition theory of power
-Powerful people are more reckless and will do more risky behavior
-More impulsive and less ethic
-Don’t care abt other people
Are powerful people more or less likely to rely on stereotypes when judging other people?
- More likely to rely on stereotypes when they judge others, they have more confidence so they believe they are right
Deindividuation
-When crowd is bigger and it is dark than more people do suicide baiting
-after work and dark is when people are less likely to be identifiable
-People are more reckless after dark
What is self-awareness and individuation?
-Self awareness
When we have a nametag
We believe ppl are watching us more
We are more self aware
Spotlight Effect
-The assumption that our own appearance and behaviors are being carefully scrutinized by others at all times, when in fact, they typically are not
