Collaborative consultation
An interactive process that allows people with diverse expertise to creatively problem-solve.
consultation
A problem-solving approach with the adults in a student’s life that are in a position to affect positive change.
egalitarianism
A nonhierarchical relationship between the consultant and the consultee.
Equity of power
When teachers feel empowered to be equal partners in problem-solving with the school counselor.
external consultee
Those outside the school whom the school counselor consults, such as parents, agency personnel, mentors, tutors, community health care providers, or any other members of the larger community that has an interest in student success but who is not regularly housed in a school setting.
internal consultees
Those within the school whom the school counselor consults, such as a classroom teacher, an administrator, the media specialist, a special education teacher, and the school nurse.
PARTNER
An acronym for Planning, Acknowledging, Rapport Building, Teaming, Negotiating, Ending, and Regrouping and is designed to help you remember a seven-step approach in facilitating consultations with parents or guardians.
Positive self-talk
The act or practice of talking to oneself in a positive fashion, either aloud or silently and mentally.
PREPARE
An acronym for Philosophy, Relationships, Equity of Power, Professional Development, Accessibility, Resources, and Evaluate and is designed to help the school counselor remember key concepts and practices to have effective consultation with teachers.
rule of parsimony
A principle according to which an explanation of a thing or event is made with the fewest possible assumptions.
triadic-dependent model
A three-person relationship in which the consultant indirectly causes change in the student through direct consultation with the parent or teacher.
unalterable factors
Conditions that school counselors are powerless to affect, such as whether or not a student has at least one loving parent, comes to school fed, and is ready to learn.
