Chapter 12 Red Blood Cells Flashcards
Plasma
contains proteins, water, electrolytes, hormones and enzymes. Makes up 55% of blood
Erythrocyte
red blood cells, transport oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout body. Make up 44% of blood.
Leukocytes
white blood cells; formed element; makes up less than 1% of blood. Part of immune response.
Platelets
formed element; part of buffy coat; makes up less than 1% of blood; part of immune response
Blood transports:
oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, waste, hormones, enzymes, immune components
Blood regulates:
body temperature, body pH, fluid and electrolyte balance.
Blood maintains:
homeostasis
Hematocrit (HCT)
the percent of blood volume made up of erythrocytes.
Male: 40-52%
Female: 37-48%
Hemoglobin
contains both heme portions and globin portion; heme iron-containing complex transports oxygen. Globin is protein portion that transports carbon dioxide.
Cyanmethemoglobin Method
converts all hemoglobin to one kind, cyanmethemoglobin, therefore making it easier to identify the concentration of hemoglobin.
