Chapter 12 - Environmental Aspects Flashcards
How can you drive more economically?
Motor traffic one of the main causes of environmental pollution
- Do not run engine idle needlessly
- Do not play around with acc. pedal when waiting
- Do not drive engine at a high rpm –> change to the correct gear in time
- Drive with foresight to avoid frequent gear changes and braking
- Do not drive too fast
- Keep distance –> avoids acc. and braking needlessly
- Engine in good condition
- Tyres with correct pressure
- Slow down before bend –> acc. uniformly halfway through the bend
- don’t have A.C. and window heating needlessly on
- Use cruise control
Can you use different types of fuel? Diesel in a petrol car?
No –> Engine will not run properly
Why is maintenance important for the environment? When should you get an inspection?
Regular maintenance ensures that your car is in good condition –> limit emission of harmful substances
As soon as you notice one of the following, get an inspection:
- Fuel consumption increases
- Engine runs irregularly
- Dark thick smoke comes from the exhaust
Under what conditions does the catalytic converter work optimally?
It operates optimally after 10-15min of driving –> basically the car needs to warm up
What are tyre labels? what does it consist of?
Used to improve people’s awareness of tyre safety, fuel efficiency and exterior noise emission
- Fuel efficiency –> rolling resistance –> Scale from A to G –> A being most efficient and G the least
- Tyre safety –> braking performance on a wet road surface –> Scale from A to G –> A being most efficient and G the least
- Noise emissions –> Uses bars (3 in total) –> 1 Bar = Low, 2 Bars = average and 3 bars = high.
2 Bar tyre makes twice as much noise as 1 bar tyre.
