Chapter 12 Flashcards

Do I enjoy working with people, data, or things?
How important is it to be my own boss?
How important are salary, benefits, and job stability?
How important are working environment, colleagues, and job stimulation?
Would I rather work for a large or small company?
Must I work in a specific city, geographical area, or climate?
Am I looking for security, travel opportunities, money, power, or prestige?
How would I describe the perfect job, boss, and coworkers?
What are the current trends in sources of new jobs? Which sources are trending upward and which are trending downward?
Websites such as Workopolis and Monster, combined with social media platforms such as LinkedIn and Facebook, may be useful and trendy; however, the textbook states that experts in the field say that internal referrals are the greatest source of new hires, followed by employment sites. But clearly, successful job searches combine networking with people who already work for companies, searching employment sites, and searching career pages on company and organization websites.
Although you may not actually find a job on the Internet, how can the big job sites be helpful to job hunters? (Obj. 2)
Job seekers are advised to use the big job boards such as Workopolis and Monster to gather information on things like résumé writing and formatting, interviewing, career planning, and salaries. The sites can provide insight into the kinds of jobs that are available in the current market, the skills sets required, and the current vocabulary of both job searches and the area in which someone is looking for employment.
What is the hidden job market, and how can candidates find jobs in it?
The hidden job market describes jobs not posted online on career sites or advertised in traditional print media. It does not mean that the jobs are secret postings or that an employer is not seeking applications. Rather, the onus is placed upon the job seeker to locate the company at which he or she wants to work and inquire about job vacancies. The best method to get into the hidden job market is by networking and using personal contacts to help locate unadvertised job openings. Sources indicate that 70 percent of all jobs are found through networking. The textbook states that job seekers should build a personal network to talk about their targeted job or industry, gain information, and locate possible job vacancies. In addition, job seekers are advised to use social media sites such as LinkedIn because these sites can let recruiters know of their talents and will help them begin to develop a professional network.
In searching for a job, how can you build a personal brand, and why is it important to do so?
According to the textbook, before you even begin the job search, you should develop your own personal brand. Personal branding is described as deciding what makes you special and desirable in the job market, what special skills make you stand out among job applicants. The personal branding process is important because it forces job seekers to think critically about how they can promote their skills and attributes to obtain a coveted position in today’s competitive job market.
What is a customized résumé and why should you have one
The customized résumé will specifically highlight or draw attention to the skills, qualifications, and experience that are relevant to the position being sought. This process may take more time, but most applicants believe the effort is well worth it.
How do chronological and functional résumés differ, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Is a hybrid résumé a better solution?
A chronological résumé lists work history job by job. Recruiters like this style because they can judge a candidate’s employment stability. This style is best for individuals with experience who show steady career growth. This style of résumé does not work well for those with limited work experience, such as students.
A functional résumé highlights skills and achievements aimed at a specific job. It does not review a candidate’s job history. This résumé style is appropriate for candidates with little experience or negative work histories. It also works well for people changing careers.
A hybrid résumé highlight skills but uses a chronological structure. It is appropriate when you have significant experience to highlight.
What is an ATS, and how does it affect the way you prepare a résumé?

The three categories that are most important are (a) job title, position, or role; (b) a technical skill or specialization; and (c) a certification, a tool used, or specific experience
