rights that are considered basic to life in any human society (including the rights to adequate food, shelter and protection for abuse)
Universal decleration of Human Rights
- based on belief “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”

BC Humans rights code - Employment
- most common type of complaint
- cant be refused work/ promotion because of your age or other grounds
- can’t exclude catagory of people on job ad
- can’t not hire person because of unrelated criminal record
BC Humans rights code - Tenancy
- cant refuse to rent to you based on any of the code’s conditions as well your source of income
(can determine whether you can afford said place)
BC Humans rights code - Accomodation/Public facilities
- can’t be denied
- unless a place (like a change room) is females/males only
BC Humans rights code - hate propoganda
- people can’t publish or display and notice, sign, symbol, emblem or other that is likely to expose a person or class of people to hatred
Children’s rights - Convention document (adopted by UN)
- children have the right to freedom of expression, thought, conscience and religion, subject to appropriate PG
- children should not be seperated from their parents, unless this is deemed to be in their best interests
- every child has a right to the highest attainable standard of health
- children have a right to education

- states shall ensure each child enjoys full rights without any discrimination
Best Interests of the Child
- the child’s best interests shall be a primary consideration in all actions
Survival and Development
- every child has an inherent right to life
Participation
- children have the right to be heard
The Universal Decleration of Human Rights (7)
- every person has the right to life, liberty and security of the person
- non one should be held in slavery, slave trade should be prohibited
- on one should be subjected to torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment
- everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person
- no one should be subjected to arbitary arrest or detention
- everyone is entiitled to a fair and public hearing and a impartial trial
- everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence
ways to help children living in poverty
- Cut taxes - thereby lessening tax burdens on low income families
- Gov. Investment in programs and services for poor children and families
- affordable child care, housing supplements ad allowances (like Child tax Benifit program) paid directly to low income families
