Describe Spain’s involvement in World War II.

A

At first Franco was not interested in getting involved because he did not believe the Germans and Russians had his best interest and just wanted Spain’s control over the mediterranean
October 1940 - Franco had meeting with Hitler
Franco agreed to be an ally but refused sovereignty over med. Territories
Hitler said he rather pull his teeth out then see franco again
Franco refused access to gibraltar for hitler for Operation Felix (wanted to take over north africa)
Franco sent 20k troops to fight against hitler in the takeover of russia

A

The number of tourist jumped from 4 mil in 1960 to 14 million in 1965. Then 40 mil 1975
Catalunya benefited because it was the hott spot for tourism
Madrid benefited from tourism
Places like extremadura and aragon started losing population because they were known for farming and that became pretty much non existent in the 1960’s
