Psychological Motivations: approach vs Avoidance
Hedonic Principle
we avoid painful experiences and approach pleasurable experiences
Avoidance Motivation
desire to avoid the experience of a negative outcome following a behavior
Approach motivation
desire to experience a positive outcome following behaviour
Loss Aversion
tendency to be motivated more strongly to avoid a loss rather than to achieve a gain, even if potential loss and gain are of equal size
Amotivation
Means without motivation
often fueled by competence, autonomy, and relatedness
growth mindset
belief that hard work and effort can improve a persons skill or talent in a particular area
Fixed Mindset
the belief that talent is innate and that skill in a particular area is not determined by hard work and effort
Grit
long term perseverance toward a goal

need to form attachments to other people for support, guidance, and protection
Positives of affiliation
from birth we seek connection to others
relationships increase self esteem
people with social connections experience less depression
people in healthy relationships live longer
negative consequences to affiliation
people stay in abusive relationships and can join gangs to feel like they belong
social exclusion activates the same region of brain as physical pain
long term isolation can lead to permanent psychological damage
self determination theory
competence, relatedness, , and autonomy give meaning to life and are instinctive
Intrinsically motivated, associated with competion
to much value on rewards creates increased suffering upon failure
Physiological
Changes in bodily arousal- heart rate, tempeture, and respiration

Subjective appraisal and interpretation of one’s feelings and environment

expression of the emotion verbally and non-verbally-smiling, frowning, laughing, slouching
