Chapter 11 Flashcards
What is genetics?
The scientifical study of heredity.
What is fertilization?
When the male and female reproductive cells join during sexual reproduction.
What are true-breeding organisms?
Organisms that if able to self-pollinate or self-impregnate would be able to produce identical offspring.
What is a trait?
A specific characteristic that varies from one individual to another.
What are hybrids?
Hybrids are offspring that have different traits than their parents.
What are genes?
Chemical factors that determine traits.
What are alleles?
Different forms of a gene that change different characteristics of each trait.
What does the principle of dominance state?
Some alleles are dominant and others are recessive.
What is segregation?
Ask Mrs. Chap
What are gametes?
Sex cells.
True or False. Gametes carry a single copy of each gene through segregation.
True.
What is probability?
The chance a particular event will occur.
What can the principles of probability be used to predict in genetics?
Genetic crosses.
What are punnet squares?
A square diagram that can be used to predict genetic crosses.
What are homozygous traits?
Traits with two dominant alleles or two recessive alleles. (TT or Tt)
