Chapter 10: Shock And Resuscitation Flashcards
What are the types of shock?
Cardiogenic Obstructive Septic Neurogenic Anaphylactic Psychogenic Hypovolemic
What are the signs of compensated shock?
Anxiety or agitation Tachycardia Pale, cool, moist skin Increased respiratory rate Nausea and vomiting Increased thirst
What are the signs of decompensated shock?
Labored or irregular respirations Ashen or cyanosis skin color Weak or absent distal pulse Dilated pupils Profound hypotension
Define afterload
The force or resistance against which the heart pumps.
What causes anaphylactic shock?
Allergic reaction
What causes cardiogenic shock?
Inadequate function of the heart, or pump failure.
What is distributed shock?
A condition that occurs when there is widespread dilation of the small arterioles, small venules, or both.
Define edema
The presence of abnormally large amounts of fluid between cells in body tissues, causing swelling of the affected area.
What’s homeostasis?
A balance of all systems of the body.
What causes hypovolemic shock?
Fluid or blood loss
What causes neurogenic shock?
Paralysis of the nerves that control the size of the blood vessels, leading to widespread dilation.
What causes obstructive shock?
A block to blood flow in the heart or great vessels, causing an insufficient blood supply to the body’s tissues.
What’s preload?
The pre-contraction pressure in the heart as the volume of blood builds up.
What causes psychogenic shock?
Sudden, temporary reduction in blood supply to the brain that causes fainting.
What causes septic shock?
Severe infection, usually bacterial.
