Chapter 10: Pre-participation Physical Exams and Drug-Testing Programs Flashcards
Pre-participation Physical Examination (PPE)
medical screening procedure designed to determine an athlete’s readiness for participation in a specific sport at a specific level of competition
Disqualifying Conditions
injuries, illnesses, or other medical conditions that pose an undue risk to athletes, their teammates, or their competitors
Mass Screening
PPE method whereby many athletes are screened simultaneously, usually in a school gymnasium or locker room
Health History Update
brief questionnaire designed to determine whether an athlete suffered any injuries or developed any medical conditions since the last comprehensive PPE
Station PPE
group screening process whereby information for individual athletes is collected at a variety of stations staffed by a combination of medical and non medical personnel, usually in the context of a school environment
Health History Form
detailed questionnaire designed to document an athlete’s previous injuries, illnesses, and other medical conditions; often serves as the basis for additional medical follow-up and evaluation
Maturational Assessment
medical screening procedure based on Tanner’s stages of maturational development; often used to classify children and adolescents for the purpose of matching them with appropriate athletic opponents
Tanner Staging
method for assessing physical maturation by categorizing the development of secondary sexual characteristics
Loss of Consortium
legal claim of damages for injuries to a spouse or for alienation of a spouse’s affection
Pre-employment Test
any procedure conducted on a potential employee that is used to determine the applicant’s suitability for employment
Random Selection
method for choosing subjects for drug testing based on permutations of timing, subject characteristics, or both; implies an equal probability of choosing any subject within a given population for testing
Reasonable Suspicion
basis for selecting subjects for drug testing based on observable signs of drug use; reasonable cause or probable cause
Enzyme Multiplied Immunoassay Technique (EMIT)
first-line screening procedure designed to detect abuse of drugs or the presence of performance enhancing drugs by testing an athlete’s urine
Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)
highly accurate method for detaching the presence of performance enhancing and other drugs in an athlete’s urine
False-Positive Test
results of a drug test that indicate the presence of a banned compound above an acceptable level, when in fact the compound is either absent or present below acceptable levels
