Self-Understanding
Self-Concept is based on observable characteristics:
• Appearance
• Possessions
• Everyday behaviors
By age 31⁄2, self-concept includes typical emotions and attitudes.
By age 5, begin to understand emerging personality traits.
Warm, sensitive parent–child relationship fosters more positive, coherent self-concept.
Elaborative reminiscing that focuses on children’s internal states is especially important.

Self Esteem
Judgments we make about our own worth, and feelings associated with those judgments
Form several self-judgments at 4yrs: • Learning things well in school • Making friends • Getting along with parents • Treating others kindly However, these cannot form global self-esteem
At age 4, we cannot form global self esteem yet
Parental support leads to
enthusiasm and motivation
If the parent criticizes often, the child is more likely to…
give up easily and express shame and dependency
