normal healthy patient with no evidence of systemic disease
ASA I
patient with severe systemic disease that is life threatening. the patient is unable to walk up a flight of stairs or two level city blocks and is in distress at rest
ASA IV
patient with mild systemic disease or a significant health risk factor. patient is able to walk up a flight of stairs or two level city blocks without difficulty. conditions are controlled
ASA II
patient with moderate to severe disease that limits activity but is not incapacitating. able to walk up a flight of stairs or two level city blocks, but stops at times due to distress. conditions are not controlled
ASA III
severe cardiovascular diseases include:
elevated blood pressure
angina episodes at rest on a daily basis
patient poorly responding to anti-arrhythmic drug therapy
loss of consciousness due to insufficient blood flow to the brain
vasopressor syncope
excessive rate and depth of respiration leading to an abnormal loss of carbon dioxide from the blood
hyperventilation
brief attacks of chest pain brought on by insufficient oxygen to the heart
angina pectoris
constriction of air passages of the lung by spasmodic contraction of the bronchial muscles
bronchospasm
prolonged muscular contractions
tonic-clonic convulsions
