Chapter 10- Classification Flashcards
phylogeny
study of the evolutionary history of organisms
taxonomy
classifying organisms
three domains of life:
- eukarya
- archea
- bacteria
classification:
domain-kingdom-phylum-class-order-family-genus-species (king Phillip came over for great spaghetti)
ways to classify bacteria:
morphology(shape, size, flagella, etc), differential staining, biochemical tests
serology
antibodies are produced against bacteria
antiserum-solution of antibodies
slide agglutination test
unknown bacteria placed on slides, antiserum added to samples, bacteria will clump when with specific antibodies
phage typing
method of classifying bacteria, which phages the bacteria is susceptible to
flow cytometry
method of classification, cells pass through machine with laser, scatter of light can identify microbe
nucleic acid amplification test
polymerase chain reaction amplifies DNA of microbe, identified using electrophoresis
nucleic acid hybridization
measures ability of DNA from unknown to bind to DNA to form a known organism
