Chapter 10 Flashcards
What are the special senses?
The special senses include vision, hearing, taste, and smell
What are somatic senses?
It’s encompassed by proprioception which is the awareness of the body in space and how it is located compared to other parts of the body.
What are the three types of receptors in terms of structural classification?
simple, complex, and nonneural
What are simple receptors?
are neurons with free nerve endings and can have myelinated or unmyelinated axons
What are complex receptors?
they are neural receptors have nerve endings that are enclosed in in connective tissue capsules
What are nonneural receptors?
they are most specialized of the receptors and synapse onto sensory neurons
What do chemoreceptors dectect?
Chemicals
What do Thermoreceptors detect?
Temperature
What do mechanoreceptors detect?
Mechanical preassure
What do photoreceptors detect?
Light
Where can chemoreceptors be found?
In the mouth and nose for taste and smell
Where can photoreceptors be found?
In the retina of the eye
Where are mechanoreceptors found?
In the cochlea of the ear (the sound pushes down the hairs of the ear)
What is a receptive field?
It is a part of a sensory neuron that can sense a stimulus
How does the size of the receptive field correlate with the sensitivity of the skin?
The larger the field, the less receptive it is but the smaller the field the more receptive it is
How does the size of the receptive field affect the convergence of the secondary sensory neurons?
The larger the receptive field the more likely it will converge and that reduces the sensitivity
