Chapter 10 Flashcards
Steps to determine geometry
- Draw lewis structure
- Find arrangement of electron pairs
- Find arrangement of bonding pairs
- Determine geometry based on bonding pairs
Hybridization
Mixing of two or more atomic orbitals to form a new set of hybrid orbitals
Molecular orbital theory
Bonds are formed from intersection of atomic orbitals to form molecular orbitals
Bonding molecular orbital
Has lower energy and greater stability than the atomic orbitals from which it was formed
Antibonding molecular orbital
Has a higher energy and lower stability than the atomic orbitals from which it was formed
How to determine molecular geometry
- Draw lewis diagram
2. Count number of lone pairs and bonded atoms
Bent shaped has
One or more loan pairs on central atom
Linear
Either a 2 atom molecule or if its three then has no loan pairs on central atom
In geometry atoms want to do what?
Get far away from each-other (repel out)
Five atom molecule
Tetrahedral and 109.5 degrees
Four atom molecule
Trigonal planar and 120 degrees or if theres a double bond 122 degrees
Three atom molecule
Bent and 119 degrees
Trigonal planar vs. trigonal pyramidal
In trigonal planar, there are no lone pair electrons in the central atom. But in trigonal pyramidal there is one lone pair at the central atom
