Chapter 1 Vocab Words Flashcards
Electromagnetic pulse EMP
When electricity improperly jumps from one place to another in ways that cause damaged.
Example: lighting is a form of EMP
Electrostatic discharge ESD
An ESD of most concern.
Passage of a static electrical charge from one item to another
Electrostatic discharge ESD strap
- consists of a wire that connects on one end to an alligator clip and on the other end to a small metal plate that secures to your wrist with an elastic strap.
- snap the alligator clip onto any handy metal part of the computer and place the ESD strap on either wrist.
Electrostatic discharge mat
Or ESD mat— acts as a point of common potential; its typical to purchase a combination ESD strap and mat that all connect to keep you, the computer, and any loose components at the same electrical potential.
take a picture of where the components go before you start removing so you know how to put them back
Equipment grounding
If you don’t have a ESD strap and on you’re on a job, before working on a computer, take a moment to touch the power supply to ensure you are on the same electrical potential as the computer. Repeat every so often.
Electromagnetic interference EMI
A magnetic field interfering with electronics
Nearly as dangerous as ESD but can cause permanent damage and or erase data.
Hard drives are susceptible to EMI
ANYTHING WITH A MOTOR HAS A MAGNET - even some screwdrivers have a magnet
Radio frequency interference RFI
Can cause poor signal or may block signal completely. Will never cause any damage, but can be incredibly irritating
Many devices emit radio waves including …
- cell phones
- wireless network cards/access points
- cordless phones
- baby monitors
- microwave ovens
