chapter 1: Understanding Physical Activity And Exercise Flashcards
Define physical activity
Any bodily movement produced by contracting skeletal muscles with a concomitant increase in energy expenditure
Voluntary Muscle Contractions can be …
1) static: isometric contractions that produce no change in the affected joint angle
- muscle strength is gained in 1 position only which will limit the application of the strength
- strength gains will be lost quickly if not practiced daily
or
2) dynamic: isotonic contractions produce a change in the affected joint angle
- ex. Squat causing a change in knee angle
- ex. Pull-up resulting in a change in elbow angle
Define dynamic movement
Allows muscle strength gains to occur across the full range of motion
- can better mimic daily activities or sporting movements
- displays of functional strength
Define exercise training
- It can be a component of physical activity
- Exercise is more specific to an end goal and quantifiable in its def:
- Definition is any planned, structured, repetitive and purposeful activity that seeks to improve or maintain any component of fitness for life or sport
Define physical fitness
- a set of attributes that people have or achieve that relates to the ability to perform physical activity
