What is Our Purpose?
To ensure everybody can be safe and feel safe
What is our purpose about?
Fundamentally our job is to keep the public safe
But we also have an important role in reassurance
To ensure people feel safe - whether at
home,
on the roads
Or in public spaces
Delivering the service the public expects and deserves.
Public having the confidence Police will respond quickly when they need us
Our ability to keep people safe and feeling safe is directly linked to the level of trust & confidence the public have in their Police service.
What is Our Mission?
To prevent crime and harm throughout exceptional policing.
How do we achieve our mission?
- Holding offenders to account
-and - supporting victims to reduce further harm.
First “peelian principal” - “the basic mission for which the police exist is to prevent crime and disorder”.

Our functions
Policing Act 2018 mandates the functions of NZ Police.
Describe core role in delivering policing services for NZ.
Ensures we plan and remain prepared for unpredictable low volume, high impact events (earthquakes, terrorism, pandemics etc)
What is our operating model?
Prevention First = National operating model for police.
Asks our people to be PROBLEM SOLVERS - look for opportunities to prevent further crime - RATHER THAN just respond to events.
It’s our DEPLOYMENT MODEL - using evidence & insights to maximise the impacts of our collective resources.
Focused prevention through PARTNERSHIPS - deliberate approach to identify where we need to link with partners - to make a long term difference in peoples lives (prevent future offending / victimisation / harm)
What are the three pot of Te Huringa o Te Tai?
1) our people and our mindset

What is the purpose of Te Huringa o Te Tai?
Provides an opportunity to refresh our collective work with AND beside Maori and Iwi as treaty partners.
Represents our strategy to bring the Maori Crown relationship to life in a Policing context.

The safety and well-being of our staff will always be our top priority
Our People also need to feel VALUED and have a sense of ownership over the direction we are heading.
