What is an ophthalmologist?
A medically qualified doctor who specialises in the eye
What is an Optometrist?
Person who tests eyes and administers prescriptions for glasses.
Also qualified to detect eye conditions but not treat them.
What is a dispensing optician?
Person who is qualified to fit and supply glasses and lenses with the prescription from the optometrist.
What is an Orthoptist?
A person specialising in eye muscles and how the eyes work together.
What is the role of an optometrist?
1- To examine the health of the eyes.
2- To find and correct any refractive error
3- Refer a patient if ocular pathology is detected.
4- Assess and fit contact lenses.
Define refractive error
When the eye cannot clearly focus the images from the outside world.
The result of refractive error is blurred vision.
Define refraction
The bending of light rays as they pass through one object to another.
What is ocular pathology?
Focuses on the diseases of the eye.
What is the GOC and what are they?
General Optical Council- They are the governing body of the profession.
What are the college of optometrists?
A body that provides guidance on professional conduct.
What are the association of optometrist?
Offers public indemnity insurance and support to members.
What is public indemnity insurance?
Protection from any claims made against you
Name some types of visual loss?
1- Uncorrected refractive error 2- Age related macular degeneration 3- Cataract 4- Diabetic retinopathy 5- Retinitis pigmentosa 6- Night blindness
What is a cataract?
Clouding of the crystalline lens. Can be due to age, trauma.
What is a crystalline lens?
a natural lens which produces 1/3 of the eyes total optical power and focuses light into an image on the retina.
