What is nutrition?
The science of foods and the nutrients in foods, and the action of nutrients within the body
Why is nutrition important to study?
There is a link between diet and health incomes. Nutrition is dependent on many variables which makes adapting it to different populations is important.
What are variables that affect nurtition?
social (ex. community), economics, culture, and psychological
Define
Nutrients
chemical substances obtained from food and used in the body to provide energy, structural materials, and regulating agents to support growth, maintenance, and repair of the body’s tissues
What are the six classes of nutrients?
carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water
Define
Essential nutrients and non-essential nutrients
Essential: Nutrients the body cannot sythesize thus must derive from food
Non-essential: body produces it in adequate amounts
Define
Energy
ability to do work or produce heat; comes from carbohydrates, fats, protein, and alcohol
Define
Non-nutrients
Compounds or organisms that are found in food that could potentially affect human health but are not identified as nutrients (ex. antioxidants or fibre)
Define
Phytochemicals
Non-nutrient compounds derived from plants that have biological activity in the body
